Eczema Treatment in Kota Kinabalu
Managed by a doctor who has eczema himself -
because understanding the itch changes how you treat it.

A Message from Dr. Tan
I have eczema.
It started in my twenties — dyshidrotic eczema on my fingers, the kind that itches underneath the skin in a way that's hard to explain to someone who's never had it. I've scratched until it hurt, bitten my own fingers in traffic because scratching wasn't enough.
These days, I flare maybe once every one to two years. When I do, it settles in a week. That didn't happen because I found a miracle cream. It happened because I finally understood the condition properly.
That's what I want to give you here — the same understanding, and a clear plan to get your eczema under control.
What Eczema actually is?
Eczema is a defective skin barrier. Your skin cells are the bricks, the fats between them are the cement and in eczema, the cement is faulty. Water escapes out, irritants get in, and your immune system stays permanently annoyed. It itches, you scratch, the barrier breaks further, more irritants get in. That loop is the disease.
Eczema is managed, not cured. But managed well, it becomes a non-event - once every year or two, a week of proper treatment, done. That is a completely different life from flaring every few weeks.

How we treat it?
We treat aggressively at the start, then taper down. Hit it hard, get the skin calm, then step down to maintenance.
-
Mild eczema — Topical steroid for about a week, plus a ceramide-based emollient that continues after the steroid stops. The steroid puts out the fire. The emollient rebuilds the wall.
-
Moderate eczema — Tapering steroid regime, non-stripping cleanser, bath oil, and antihistamines at night so you sleep and stop scratching unconsciously.
-
Severe eczema — Wet wrap therapy, short-course oral steroids to break the cycle. If it's genuinely resistant, we refer you to a specialist for phototherapy or advanced options.

For patients concerned about steroids, we have non-steroid alternatives
tacrolimus and pimecrolimus — especially useful on the face and for children.
We'll message you at around one week to check how you're responding.
Not as marketing — because week one is when we find out whether the plan is
working and whether the cream is being applied correctly.
Eczema in Sabah
Living in Kota Kinabalu changes the picture:
-
Sweat and humidity — the number one trigger we see. Salt and moisture sitting on a broken barrier all day.
-
Sea water — helps some patients, flares others. You'll know after the first time.
-
Hidden triggers — dust, new detergents, workplace materials. Our consultations are 90% conversation because finding your trigger determines whether the treatment holds.
